We had our Sensational Saturday Soiree flash tasting last weekend and boy did we have a fantastic lineup on show! Brad and Chris had the chance to taste the selection alongside our clients so here's their little spiel on each of the wines!
And for those who were unable to attend (or did attend but can't get enough of it - like us!), fret not as these wines are still available for purchase and perfect for the holiday festivities... or just about any ocassion really.
Cheers & Happy Holidays!
– WINES FEATURED: CHAMPAGNE –
Louis Roederer Brut Premier Champagne NV
CHRIS: An elegant Champagne with zesty, citrus flavours and creamy mousse mouth feel. Base wine 2016. Ready for action and leaping from the glass!
Louis Roederer Brut Premier Champagne NV 1500ml Magnum
CHRIS: The ultimate party starter. Looking fantastic, drinking superbly, base wine 2014. A touch of extra richness but was looking fresher than the current 750ml NV. What a delight, simply, Yum!
Devaux Grand Cuvee Champagne NV
CHRIS: 97 points at the Decanter world wine awards. 5 years on lees gives extra richness. Low dosage makes this a wonderful aperitif style Champagne. Really gets the palate zinging!
BRAD: Rich, biscuity and cream, cream, creamy. Nougat, Vanilla, preserved lemon and mandarin notes. Truly delicious. On reflection I put this in the top two NV’s I’ve tried this year!
Devaux Vintage D Champagne 2008
CHRIS: 10 years on lees, Pinot Noir dominant and low dosage this Champagne is drinking beautifully. A taut concentrated Champagne with deliciously refreshing citrus notes. Great value Vintage Champagne from the glorious 2008 vintage!
Krug Grande Cuvee Champagne NV
CHRIS: Rich and powerful as Krug is renowned for. A blend of 183 wines from 1990 through to 2006. It displays a delicious foray of brioche, hazelnut and honey yet still has a wonderful backbone of fresh citrus acidity. The ultimate show stopper!
– WINES FEATURED: ITALIANS –
Tenuta d’Iuzzolini Ciro Greco Bianco 2018
CHRIS: Fantastic Italian white perfect for the warmer months ahead. Citrus, white flowers, cleansing acidity with just a hint of spice to finish. Scott’s go to white on his Italian trip in May.
Canalicchio di Sopra Rosso di Montalcino 2016
CHRIS: 100% Sangiovese and a lovely example of the Rosso style. Displaying wonderful freshness of lifted red fruits with medium tannins and refined spicy finish. One of the best Rosso’s you’ll try from the 2016 vintage.
BRAD: Super bright red fruits that are jumping out of the glass! This wine has great tension to last in the cellar (if you can set it aside) but best drunk in its youth to take advantage of the vibrancy of fruit, spice and deep herbal notes. A very moreish example from a boutique ‘rustic’ producer. YUM
Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino 2013
CHRIS: The big brother to the Rosso, the 2013 Brunello is also 100% Sangiovese. The fruit power is intense and palate dense, for a Sangiovese. Dark fruit and spice and all things nice. From the much heralded 2013 vintage this wine is built for the long haul with firm grippy tannins.
Produttori del Barbaresco Nebbiolo Barbaresco 2016
CHRIS: One of the discoveries of the day’s tasting. Standing tall above the pack this Nebbiolo was just exploding from the glass. With each vintage you think it can’t get any better yet for the last 3 vintages the only way has been skyward for Produttori. Scott was quick to declare this was his “Wine of the Year!”
BRAD: What a Wine! Packed full of tight red berry fruit, licorice, freshly tanned leather and dried sage leaf. Super powerful yet pretty as hell (or is that heaven?). This is a wine we’ve looked at each year since the 2012 vintage and OMG this vintage steals the prize. Jump on it.
– WINES FEATURED: FRENCH –
Benjamin Darnault Picpoul di Pinet 2018
CHRIS: From France’s southern Languedoc-Roussillon region comes the ultimate oyster match. Refreshing, zippy with a cleansing minerally finish. Bring on summer!
BRAD: Citrus zest, white flowers and pear skin with a touch of lip-smacking salinity…the perfect ‘go to’ for the hot Summer months. Ridiculous value for money.
Louis Claude Desvignes Javernieres Gamay Morgon 2018
CHRIS: Revisit the wines from Beaujolais and the varietal of Gamay. Packed with flavour, light to medium bodied with wonderful aromatics and a touch of five spice. The perfect partner for Asian food!
BRAD: Subtle Chinese five spice, juicy ripe red fruits, dark chocolate and fine tannins. A wine of power across the palate that builds and builds. Lip-smackingly good!
Domaine Cornu Pernand Vergelesses 2017
CHRIS: From one of the winemaker’s who spent 30 years at DRC. Light, elegant, lifted and aromatic from the Burgundy sub-region of Pernand Vergelesses (just south of the famous hill of Corton). This is good value Red Burgundy!
