Tasting Notes

Drawn from mature Barossa Valley vines—some of considerable age—and shaped by a low-yielding, high-quality vintage, the 2021 First Pick Shiraz presents as a flagship expression of controlled power and refinement. Leading critical consensus is emphatic, with Ray Jordan awarding 97 points and describing it as “exquisite…modern Barossa shiraz…power and concentrated opulence…controlled in a more refined presentation.” In the glass, it shows an almost opaque, inky depth, immediately signalling its density. Aromatically, it unfolds in layered waves of blackberry, plum and blueberry, interwoven with graphite, clove, charcuterie and subtle floral lift, all framed by high-quality French oak. The palate is lavish yet composed: rich, cascading dark fruits are anchored by notes of cocoa, espresso and spice, while fine-grained oak and silky, persistent tannins lend both structure and polish. Despite its scale, the wine maintains admirable balance and poise, carrying its intensity through to a long, resonant finish that speaks equally of Barossa power and modern precision.
