Longview: Australia's Greatest Bargain Winery
Winemaker Peter Saturno was largely influenced of his Nonna (Grandmother) who emigrated from Northern Italy (Friuli) and settled in the Adelaide Hills in the 1930’s. Peter studied Wine Marketing at the University of Adelaide and soon after started winemaking down at Langhorne creek. After a few vintages he hit the pavement selling boutique wines for a local Adelaide wholesaler before taking the opportunity to work in the capital of the wine world… New York. His portfolio boasted the very best producers from all over the world and it was here that Peter fell in love with many wines but in particular Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gruner Veltliner and Nebbiolo.
The time had come to give Pete’s liver a rest and the opportunity to take over a vineyard with the rest of his immediate family was too much to pass up. Longview Vineyard has now been under the guidance of Peter and the Saturno family for over 15 years. The vineyard was shortlisted by Halliday as one of 4 of the best in Australia and was elevated to 5 red stars this year, one of the very few wineries to be elevated and not demoted. The Vineyard is now over 60 hectares and produces fruit for Longview and 30 other winemakers. The passion for Italian varietals and in particular Nebbiolo lives on and Longview is proud to have the most extensive and oldest plantings of Nebbiolo in Australia.
