The last release of STEVE PANNELL’S Protero Nebbiolo (the 2019 vintage) was awarded Gold from the Adelaide Hills Wine Show as well as Best Red Wine of the Show. That’s no mean feat for an emerging varietal in the AU market and all for sub $40!
The 2020 wine wasn’t made due to the fires in the Adelaide Hills so we’ve waited patiently for the 2021 edition. Steve didn’t make his top line Adelaide Hills Nebbiolo either in 2021 (The Capo – circa $70+) choosing to add this juice to the Gumeracha Nebbiolo resulting in the blockbuster that we sampled last week.
“There really aren’t many places outside Piedmont where Nebbiolo has translocated well. This vineyard is one of those places and I am confident in stating that it may well be the ideal red grape variety for the region.” Stephen Pannell
Additionally, we popped open the following five outstanding Langhe Nebbiolo’s (what else do you do on a Thursday afternoon) to compare. It’s refreshing to see that modern Nebb producers are making approachable, aromatic versions that we once would wait 5+ years to jump into.
These five wines are currently retailing for just shy of $60/ btl but today we’re offering one of each along with a Protero Nebbiolo for $278 for the 6 pack…that’s $50 off RRP! Just 12 mixed packs available…

GB BURLOTTO is a Piedmont producer of immense history established on traditional winemaking practices. G.B.’s death in 1927 not only took away Burlotto’s driving force, it also deprived Verduno of its greatest champion. And so, both faded into obscurity in the decades that followed. But now, with G.B.’s great-great-grandson Fabio Alessandria as winemaker, Burlotto’s star is again rising, reclaiming its position as one of Piedmont’s great small producers. While Monvigliero is arguably the jewel in Burlotto’s crown, all of Fabio’s wines display astonishing purity, having been born of the same winemaking philosophy with a modern twist.
He makes four Barolos: Monvigliero, Cannubi, Acclivi (a blend of Burlotto’s crus) and a beautiful Barolo normale. The common thread in all these wines is surreal texture and pristine aromatics. From the same vineyards as the Barolos, but with shorter wood aging, Fabio produces his fantastic Langhe Nebbiolo. He demonstrates his mastery of Barbera with his delicious Barbera d’Alba and the deeper, more powerful Barbera d’Alba “Aves.” And his Dolcetto d’Alba and Freisa are among the best from any producer, both effusively rich and pure. Finally, the beautiful red Pelaverga—from an ancient variety grown by the family since 1800— cherries, raspberries, and lots of fruit make a light red wine with great acidity & spice. Pelaverga is best compared to Gamay.
