- 96 – Stephen Wong, The Real Review
Rooted in an east-northeast-facing block where ancient clay lenses intersect fine schist gravels, the 2023 Emma’s Block stems from a warm, dry early-season growing cycle tempered by late-season relief.
It presents a captivating, brooding depth in the glass, unfurling measured layers of perfumed raspberry, wild cherry, and bramble rose laced with subtle baking spices, dried thyme, and sweet herbs.
The palate expands gracefully with a sophisticated sense of breadth, anchored by a fine, tea-like grip of submerged structural tannins and vibrant balancing acidity.
Highlighted as a magnificent release that beautifully challenges traditional regional norms, Stephen Wong notes it as a "complex wine with layers of concentrated berry and cherry fruit, baking spice, dried porcini, wildflowers and even a hint of honey, this majestic pinot expands across the palate as each flavour expresses itself against the backdrop of ripe, grainy, black olive tannins", carrying forward into an exceptionally long, spice-tinged finish.
