Tasting Notes

Syrah from the pick of Adrian Hoffmann’s two oldest plots in Ebenezer, planted between 1888 and 1912 and in 1927; matured for 78 weeks in French oak. The flow from the surging tide of pure, velvety fruit here is bonkers. Lush yet freshly and beautifully balanced across its length. Macerated satsuma plum, black cherry and boysenberry cut with hints of Chinese five-spice, purple flowers, licorice, clove and a whiff of tobacco leaf and graphite. Purity, fruit depth and power reside here, but not at the expense of freshness and balance. There is a superb tannin structure, fine and kinetic, that lends structure and grace to the wine on the long finish. A cracking wine. -Dave Brookes for Halliday Wine Companion

"The 2021 Hoffmann Dallwitz marks harvest number 17, and I feel like this is the season that everything went to plan for us," says McKinley. The season is entrenched in this wine: it has clarity and freshness, precision and transparency. There's blue and black fruits, hot asphalt, dried roses, pomegranate pearls and pan drippings, salted licorice and sweet roasted beets, pink peppercorn, fresh summer raspberry, cracked fennel and tobacco. The tannins are a real highlight; they're chewy and pliable, chalky and fine yet pervasive. This has beauty and grace, restraint and pace, and all things work in harmony with the other. 2021 has a reputation for being a beautiful season, and when we see a wine like this, we can understand that. The future is long and bright. 14.7% alcohol, sealed under cork and wax. -98pts, Erin Larkin for Wine Advocate
