Wine Storage in Brisbane: What to Look For

Brisbane is a wonderful place to drink wine and a difficult one to store it. The Bureau of Meteorology records average daily maximums of around 30°C in Brisbane in January and February (Bureau of Meteorology), roughly double the temperature wine is traditionally cellared at.

For wine you will drink within a few months, that may not matter. For a collection you plan to hold for ten, twenty or thirty years, it matters a great deal. If you are comparing professional wine storage in Brisbane, these are the six things to check.

Checklist: choosing a wine storage facility in Brisbane

  1. Climate control: a purpose-built cellar held at a set temperature and humidity around the clock, not an air-conditioned room.
  2. Stability: continuous monitoring, with alarms if conditions drift.
  3. Security: controlled access, alarms, surveillance, fire protection and clear insurance arrangements.
  4. Collection management: every bottle inspected, catalogued and visible to you online.
  5. Pricing: a clear basis for charges, including handling and retrieval fees.
  6. Experience: a business for which storage is a core service, with a long track record.

Is the cellar climate-controlled, or just air-conditioned?

An air-conditioned room is not a wine cellar. Ask what temperature and humidity the facility is kept at, and whether those conditions are held 24 hours a day or only while staff are on site.

Humidity matters mainly for wine sealed under natural cork, where very dry air can dry corks out over many years.

Wineaway's Bowen Hills cellar is kept at 14 to 15°C and around 70% relative humidity all year round.

How stable are the conditions?

The temperature setting is only half the answer; how consistently it is held is the other half. Heat speeds up wine ageing, and the Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) notes that exposure to high temperatures can cause wine to expand enough to leak or push the cork (AWRI Technical Note 09).

Ask whether conditions are monitored continuously, who is alerted if they drift, and what happens during a power outage.

How secure is the facility?

A serious collection can represent decades of buying, significant value and bottles that cannot be replaced. Ask how access is controlled, who can handle your wine, how collections are kept separate, and what alarm, surveillance and fire protection systems are in place.

Ask about insurance too, and confirm in writing what is and is not covered.

How is your wine managed day to day?

Good storage means you always know what you own. Ask who checks wine on arrival, whether each bottle is catalogued, whether you can see your collection online, and how quickly a bottle can be retrieved.

Wineaway runs a fully managed service. Every incoming wine is inspected, catalogued and recorded in your personal online cellar. You can review your collection at any time and request wines for collection or delivery.

How are storage fees charged?

Storage pricing is not always easy to compare. Some facilities charge for a locker or a fixed space, so you pay for the full capacity even when it is half empty. Others charge for each bottle actually stored.

Wineaway charges by the bottle, so your costs rise and fall with the size of your collection. [Wineaway: consider adding the per-bottle rate or a link to your pricing.]

When comparing providers, look past the headline monthly figure to handling charges, retrieval fees, minimum terms and any other costs.

How easy is the facility to reach?

You may not visit often, but access matters when you want a case for dinner, need to receive a delivery or are reorganising your collection.

Wineaway is at [street number] Montpelier Road, Bowen Hills, about 500 metres from the Gasworks precinct and between Brisbane's CBD and the airport.

Who is looking after your wine?

Wine storage is a custody business: you are trusting someone with bottles you may not see for years. Ask how long the business has operated, who manages the collection, and whether storage is a core part of what they do or an add-on.

Wineaway is Queensland's longest-established and largest fine wine retail and storage operator, and has provided specialist wine storage in Brisbane since 2000.
