The 1998 vintage was a spectacular one around many regions across the Old and New Worlds.
In South Australia, it is remembered as the ‘Vintage of the Century’ (albeit with some competition from 1990). Like wildfire the vintage’s fame quickly took hold and soon it didn’t matter what region a wine came from, if it had 1998 on the label then it was ‘special’. Some argued many of these aged beauties, particular from the Barossa, were overripe and would ‘fall over’ in due course, yet 21 years on 1998 remains a heavy favourite amongst enthusiasts and restaurateurs alike.
The spectacular 1998’s were just hitting the market when Wineaway opened 20 years ago thus holding a special place in our wine psyche, and although thin on the ground these days, when a 1998 crosses our path it still manages to electrify the senses, and that’s before the cork has even been pulled.
Happy 21st Birthday Vintage 1998!
