The Melbourne Cup may have been run and won earlier this week, yet we remain firm believers that a gift horse still resides in our stables…
Today, we’re whipping up a super special with an epic price on the world’s most hallowed NV bubbles - Krug Grande Cuvee, when you buy 3 or more bottles of the epic 2012 Devaux Vintage D. Devaux is Champagne’s best kept secret, but who better to ask for a recommendation than Chef de Cave of Krug, Eric Label, who refers to Devaux as “the Krug of the Côte des Bar”. It’s difficult to dispute such recognition especially when one learns that Krug source a healthy quantity of their supply for their $380+ Champagne range from Devaux.
As many of you would know, 2012 and 2008 represent the two finest Champagne vintage releases in the last decade and 2008 is probably considered #1 in most circles. Having tasted the 2012 Vintage D last week I feel convinced that this 2012 is the best ever example of this wine. It is a sophisticated, complex vintage with a fresh and creamy texture and a long citrus and mineral finish. Not far off the finest prestige cuvees money can buy, and all for just $149/b.
Additionally, the Blanc de Blanc, Blanc de Noir and Cuvee D bubbles were all incredibly delicious as well, noting the latter has over 300 parcels making up the blend, including a selection fermented in oak casks. Cuvee D rose to fame upon scoring 97 Points & becoming a Platinum Gold medal winner at the Decanter World Wine Awards in 2021, and is currently pouring at Restaurant Gordan Ramsay , The Savoy Hotel & iconic French 3 Star Michelin restaurants – Pierre Gagnaire, Guy Savoy & Anne Sophie PIC.
Founded in 1846 by the brothers Jules and Auguste Devaux, today Devaux is owned by the Union Auboise in the Côte des Bar – the heartland of Pinot Noir in Champagne. Physically closer to Chablis than Reims or Épernay, the vines grow on Burgundian soils of Kimmeridgian marl and Portlandian limestone. Chef de Cave since 1999, Michel Parisot was named the ‘Sparkling Winemaker of the Year’ at the 2020 International Wine Challenge – an achievement that is testament to Michel’s pioneering approach to winemaking.
