Halliday's Best New Winery for 2026 has released just two vintages. On 29 September, taste both of them side by side, then take the Pinot Noir apart through two individual sites normally blended into the estate wine.

Elanto sits on a south-east facing slope at Balnarring, overlooking Western Port towards Phillip Island. Tony and Elizabeth Todaro found the property in 2018 and had the French soil scientist Claude Bourguignon survey it. His report confirmed the site could grow the kind of deep-rooted vines they were after, and the entire 10.6 hectares went in during a single season in 2019, designed block by block around his findings. Sandro Mosele, the winemaker behind Kooyong and Port Phillip Estate, runs it.

The density is the number everyone quotes: 11,111 vines per hectare, more than four times the Australian norm, in rows barely three quarters of a metre apart. It is a Burgundian way of farming almost nobody here attempts, because it is slow, expensive and unforgiving.

The vineyard is worked as eight separate sites, five Pinot Noir and three Chardonnay, each picked and made on its own before the parcels are assembled. This evening reverses that. The 2023 and 2024 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir give you the whole estate, first vintage against second. Basalt and Ironstone give you two of the parts, on their own, for the first time.

Sandro is pouring all six and talking through the site he built. Elanto has no cellar door and no plan for one.
